Susan Ives was raised in the Philadelphia suburbs, in spitting distance of where Washington crossed the Delaware. She has a degree in political science from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, and studied journalism at the University of Maryland.

When she told her father that she had accepted an army commission, he blurted out in stunned disbelief, “Whose army?” Despite his reservations, she served in the 101st Airborne Division, the Military District of Washington, Army Recruiting Command and V Corps, in Frankfurt, Germany. She is a Gulf War veteran. She and her husband, John, a San Antonio native, moved to Texas in 1992.

Susan has written extensively for magazines about computers and technology and is co-author of Living Faithfully in a Violent World, published by Augsburg Press in 2002. Since April 2003 she has written a weekly op-ed column for the Insight section of the San Antonio Express-News.

She works part-time for the San Antonio peaceCENTER, teaches Web design for Alamo PC, a nonprofit computer group, and is an active member of the Conservation Society. She plays the hammered dulcimer and accordion with reckless incompetence and reads obsessively.
